"Our clients wanted a light, spacious kitchen where they could cook, dine and entertain," explains Derek Dobbins, Director at Kitchens International, who undertook the project. "The kitchen needed to flow into the family area, where their children and grandchildren tend to gather - meaning whoever is cooking can join in the conversation rather than just looking at a wall..."
The project in a nutshell
The property: A new-build detached mansion house in Stirlingshire, complete with gym, pool, steam room and six acres of land.
Key to the room is that statement island. "It's the focal space of the kitchen," says Derek. "Ergonomic design puts storage, food-and-drink-prep areas and cooking zones all in close proximity. The shape and position of the island not only allows easy-access to appliances and storage during cooking but also allows that social cooking experience that the clients really craved".
Whilst the outside of the property boasts a classic baronial-style exterior, the interior is another story entirely: think modern, with lots of natural light streaming in. Naturally, it was important to reflect this airy feel throughout the kitchen design, too; positioned at the rear of the house and overlooking the garden, the space lends itself perfectly to the aesthetic.
Smart cabinetry framed the appliances, which included carefully selected pieces from from Gaggenau, Blanco and Sub-Zero; an impressive splashback from Intaglio was sorted to add extra interest to the space.
The overall result? "It's a well-balanced design that works well within the scale of the room," muses Derek, "with a tasteful combination of contemporary design and carefully chosen soft furnishings really bringing it all together".
For anyone in the early stages of planning their own kitchen redesign, Derek recommends a few simple things. "Take time to explore the options available and make a list of your key requirements," he advises. "Stay practical and functional, and engage with a designer as soon as you can."
