Add a pretty DIY twist to your wedding with these gorgeous ideas from Modern Calligraphy Workshop

Fountain pens at the ready, ladies and gents! Calligraphy is having a serious moment right now - and it's not hard to see why. No longer restricted to scratchy copperplate writing, the art form has taken on a gorgeous new form - think swirls, curls and total, utter sophistication.

11 ways calligraphy can make your wedding a whole lot more gorgeous

There are endless ways to include a splash of calligraphy in your wedding: from the initial save-the-dates all the way through to the place-settings for your reception tables. As well as decorating your wedding beautifully, it also makes for a seriously relaxing hobby - and in this day-and-age of endless screen time, it makes for a refreshing 'something new' to try your hand at, too.

Use the templates below from Imogen Owen's gorgeous book Modern Calligraphy Workshop (Quadrille, £15), to inspire you - and we'd love to see how you get on! Tweet or Instagram pics of your calligraphy.

Save-the-date/invites for your reception

Difficulty level: high

A gorgeous wreath-wrapped invite will certainly catch your guests' collective eye! Before you draw the garland outline, work out how much space you'll need for your text - if easier, lightly sketch it into place with pencil. Opt for black ink for a gorgeous monochrome look, or for a rustic feel, use light green ink and pops of yellow or gold.

Signs for your reception

Difficulty level: simple

These adorable hand-lettered signs are as easy or as hard as you choose to make them, all depending on the kind of font you want! Keep things minimalistic with thick-and-thin angular lines (with the occasional curling flick for added pretty), or alternatively, choose an italicised font (similar to the one used aboved) for a romantic flourish.

For your tables: signs, numbers and names

Difficulty level: easy

Add some calligraphy charm to your reception tables with charming handmade signs; for extra luxe, use a dazzling metallic ink.

For a pretty floral flourish

Difficulty level: varies

We can see see these cute illustrations looking gorgeous on handmade wedding favours - we're talking DIY seed-packet favours, for example.

A gorgeous quote to decorate your venue

Difficulty level: high

Pick your favourite quote and try hand-writing it - this looks particularly gorgeous on chalkboards, FYI.
